Arab countries back reconciliation efforts in Somalia

Sirte, Libya - The extraordinary Arab summit which rounded off here Saturday has expressed support for efforts by Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed to ensure national reconciliation in the country within the context of the the Djibouti Agreement on Reconciliation.

In a communique issues after the summit, participants urged Somali stakeholders to adopt dialogue as the only method for resolving disputes hindering comprehensive national reconciliation.

Arab leaders decided to provide a monthly financial support of US$10 million to Somalia to allow its government to run the country's institutions and implement its programmes concer ning security, stability and reconciliation and to offer services to the population.

The extraordinary summit in Sirte was held to develop a new structure for a joint Arab action and to promote the institutions of the Arab League, founded in 1945.
