Government officials are examining reports that two groups of suspected Somali pirates, who were arrested this month, could be linked to the disappearance of two South African sailors.

Bruno Pelizzari and Deborah Calitz were attacked by buccaneers off the coast of east Africa a month ago but so far, there has been no ransom demand and no contact with their kidnappers.

The alleged pirate gangs were arrested by the Dutch navy in separate incidents off the coast of Somalia but the Netherlands is now unsure of what to do with them.

“We are just studying their report because they indicated that there might be links between those they have arrested and the kidnapped South Africans,” said the International Relations and Cooperation Department’s Saul Molobi.
