AU envoy welcomes Somali parliament's approval of new cabinet

The African Union special envoy to Somalia on Saturday welcomed the transitional federal parliament's approval of the country's new cabinet, which was appointed by new Prime Minister Mohammed Abdullahi Mohammed early this month.

In a statement issued in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, the special representative of the chairperson of the African Union Commission for Somalia, Ambassador Boubacar Gaoussou Diarra, said the approval will help to ensure smooth operations of the fledging government which has been struggling to stamp its foot on the Somali soil.

"The approval by parliament of the new cabinet will help ensure smooth running of the TFG and speedy implementation of the remaining Transitional Federal Tasks. I wish to appeal to all Somalis including those in the Diaspora to support the Prime Minister and his cabinet in implementing the Djibouti Peace Process," Diarra said.

The AU envoy assured the premier and the new cabinet of continued support from the African Union and its peacekeeping mission in Somalia AMISOM to enable the TFG succeed in its efforts of promoting dialogue and reconciliation to end almost two decades of fighting in Somalia.

The country, which has not had a functioning central government since 1991 and has been torn apart by decades of conflict and factional strife, more recently with al-Shabaab Islamic militants, is also facing a dire humanitarian crisis in which 3.2 million people, more than 40 percent of the population, is in need of aid.

The Horn of Africa nation has not had a functioning central government since 1991.

The U.N.-backed government is struggling to survive in the face of a fierce insurgency from Islamic militant groups, who control most of Mogadishu and southern Somalia.
