Beled Weyne (HOL) -A main bridge in Beled Weyne collapsed Saturday evening; the bridge, built in 1974, connects the west and east of the city and is an important transport route in the city and its collapse, citizen’s fear, will bring economic hardship to the area.

The bridge failed when a truck carrying 45 tonnes of food supplies into the Howl- wadag district attempted to make a crossing. Reports on the ground told Hiiraan that the accident caused no casualties

A large crowd of curious spectators gathered at site of the accident to assess the damage. Militants from Hizbul Islam, who control the city, fired warning shots into the air to disperse the crowd who they feared would begin looting the spilt goods.

A local engineer Ali Hagi Shirwa said that “in recent years people have not been observing the maximum capacity that the bridge could handle”. He also said that he had foreshadowed the bridge collapse for some time now and because of its over usage it was inevitable.
