Police said on Saturday they are investigating whether or not eviction letters issued to Somali shop owners and traders in the Morreesburg area are in fact genuine.

Letters were given to several Somali nationals on Friday, ordering them to shut down their stores.

A mob of around 50 people then went on the rampage, looting their shops. Four Somalis were injured.

The police’s November Filander said the origins of the letters need to be determined.

“It is not confirmed if these municipal notices were dished out by municipal officers. This is part of our investigation,” he said.

Somali human rights activist, Abdhihakim Mohammed, said fellow nationals are always being targeted.

“According to the authorities there are all they could. There are ongoing efforts that unfortunately they are not [meeting] expectations,” he said. (Edited by Deshnee Subramany)
