NAIROBI, Kenya — Residents say fighting between Islamist insurgents and Somali government forces has killed five people in the capital.

Ahmed Dahir Husein says he saw three civilians who had been shot lying dead in the street. Mohamud Ali Shobaye says he saw two dead fighters in Mogadishu's southern Hodan neighborhood.

A spokesman for the insurgency says four masked gunmen also shot dead an Islamist commander in the capital's Bakara market in a separate incident.

Sheik Ibrahim Barre Osman says that it was unclear who killed Barre Ali Barre, a commander with the Party of Islam faction of the insurgency.

The group is fighting the government but has also fought another Islamist group called al-Shabab.
