A Somali man has been charged with attempting to murder the Danish cartoonist whose depiction of the Prophet Muhammad caused an international storm.

The 28-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was shot by Danish police after allegedly breaking into Kurt Westergaard's home in Aarhus armed with a knife and an axe.

The suspect is said to have been shot in the knee and the shoulder and appeared in court on a stretcher at the weekend.

He denies the charges and has been remanded in custody.

Police in Denmark are said to believe he may have links with Somali Islamist militants.

Officers claim the 28-year-old broke into Mr Westergaard's home on Friday night and declared he was going to kill him. The cartoonist then grabbed his granddaughter and fled to a specially designed panic room where he raised the alarm.

The man is then alleged to have attacked police with the axe when they arrived at the scene.

Mr Westergaard and his home have been under close police protection since the publication of 12 controversial cartoons in the newspaper Jyllands Posten in 2005.

The images sparked outrage in the Muslim world with Danish embassies coming under attack and dozens of people dying in riots.
