The chairman of the African Union Commission, Jean Ping, at the close of the 14th summit of the pan-African organization in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, urged the continent's donors to honour the financial commitments they took on Somalia during the Brussels roundtable.

About US$ 213 million was pledged as contribution at the roundtable held in April 2009 to help the federal transition government, led by President Sharif Ahmed S heikh Sharif.

"Unfortunately, we don't see anything coming. We need those resources to finance our troops involved in the protection of institutions in Somalia. We are expecting other contingents to strengthen the mission but we need the money promised to us," Mr. Ping said.

He however stressed that Africa has taken up its responsibility in Somalia by dispatching troops being managed through the generosity of AU member countries.

"Those troops are sent by Uganda and Burundi, carried by Algeria, given uniform by Egypt. We are expecting the arrival of contingents from Nigeria and Djibouti.

The rest of the international community must also take up its responsibility," the AU commission chairman said.

The crisis prevailing in Somalia since 1991, when Mohammed Siad Barré stepped d own from power, was broadly tackled at the 14th AU summit that ended Tuesday with the adoption of an Addis Ababa Declaration on the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).

Sharif, who attended the summit, briefed his colleague presidents and heads of state of the present situation in Mogadishu, urging them to continue backing his steps for a negotiated settlement of the crisis.
