Two Somali shopkeepers are recovering in hospital after they were attacked by a group of men in Freedom Park, south of Johannesburg, on Tuesday night.

Tensions have been brewing since Saturday after locals forcefully shut down foreign-owned businesses.

The attack came just hours before parties were to meet at the Eldorado Park Police Station on Wednesday.

The task team assigned to restore peace between foreign and local businessmen in Freedom Park is concerned about the attack but remains hopeful of progress.

Local shop keepers arrived in Eldorado Park Police Station in numbers and the team is hoping to convince locals to allow foreigners to reopen their shops after forcing them to close their doors on Saturday.

They want foreigners to stop expanding in the area, saying their growth is killing local business potential.
