NAIROBI — Kenyan police chief Mathew Iteere said Saturday he had called in the FBI to help probe the killing of three of his men in separate incidents in the capital.

One police officer died Friday when a grenade was apparently thrown into his vehicle, while two more were shot dead later in the day by two men on a motorbike while on traffic duty in Nairobi.

The attackers were pursued after the incident and shot dead after exploding a grenade, Iteere said in a later statement.

"We have invited the help of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation to help us in the investigations," Iteere told journalists Saturday.

It was not clear if the two incidents were linked, but Iteere ruled out the involvement of radical Somali Islamists. The grenade attack happened in the district of Eastleigh, which has a high Somali population.

"We do not think it's the Al-Shebab militia group who are responsible," he said.

A Shebab leader contacted by AFP in Mogadishu, Sheikh Muktar Robow Abu Mansur, also denied his group had anything to do with the murders.

"We have no reason to target and attack people inside Kenya," he said, blaming "elements aiming to destroy the image of the Somali society" in the country.
