They said there has already been tension between some local township residents and foreign nationals.
Earlier this week officials were deployed to the Lingelethu township as learners went on the rampage and torched the combined Naphakade Primary and Secondary school.
Learners are apparently disgruntled about overcrowding at their school and burnt down five of their nine classrooms.
Six youths were arrested and are facing arson and public violence charges.
The violent outbursts outside the Naphakade School were reminiscent of the 1980’s as angry learners hurled stones at police officials.
Police are now concerned of the brewing tension between township residents and Somali shopkeepers.
Some locals apparently roughed up some of the foreigners during the school rampage.
Police Brigadier Vincent Beaton said his officers will remain on standby at least until next week to prevent any bloodshed.
“We’re also currently following up on those leads and we will utilise all the personnel available to have a high visibility in this area.”
Officials are appealing to the community to reveal who is behind the violence and not to support vigilante-like behaviour.
