BRUSSELS (AFP) - Somali pirates hijacked Wednesday a Turkish cargo vessel off the coast of Kenya, the European Union's naval force patrolling the area said.

"The MV Yasin C was taken around midday 250 nautical miles (460 kilometres) off the Kenyan coast," east of the port of Mombasa, said EU-NAVFOR spokesman Commander John Harbour.

The 36,000-ton (32,650 tonne) bulk carrier had a crew of 25 aboard, all of them thought to be Turkish, he said, adding that the EU force "is closely monitoring the situation.
