MOGADISHU (HOL) - Simultaneous heavy fighting and shelling  have taken place in areas of Mogadishu today. The fighting is taking place  between Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government (TFG) troops aided by  AMISOM troops on one side and Islamic insurgent forces opposed to the TFG  on the other side.

The fighting was mainly concentrated along the Makka al-Mukarrama street.  During the fighting, areas that have come under shelling include the  districts of Hodan and Howlwadaag. These two districts take the brunt of  shelling whenever fighting occurs in Mogadishu. About ten people have been  confirmed injured who have been taken to area hospitals by ambulances.

The fighting which lasted for short period of time comes at a day when two  suicide bombers using two white vehicles with UN logos, but packed with  explosives have struck at an African Union peacekeepers' base in the  Somali capital, Mogadishu.

The suicide missions follow Monday’s U.S. commando operation that  reportedly killed Kenyan-born Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, 28, in remote  southern Somalia. The commando operation has triggered an angry response  from Islamist rebels fighting the nation's U.N.-backed government who  vowed to revenge the death of their colleagues.

An Islamist al-Shabab spokesman told Reuters news agency the attacks were  in revenge for a US raid which reportedly killed an al-Qaeda suspect this  week.
