MOGADISHU, Somalia, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Fighting accompanied by heavy shelling rocked parts of the Somali capital of Mogadishu, witnesses said Tuesday.

Fighting between transitional government solders and Islamic fighters halted movement of traffic, people and businesses in the busy Bakara market and heavily traveled Makka al-Mukaram Street, Shabelle Media Network reported.

Reports were surfacing that civilians had died or were injured in the attack, but the network said it couldn't confirm the information.

Witnesses said Mogadishu residents fled from their houses and were expressing concern about the clashes that involved weapons and mortar shells.
