The Government has denied it is training Somali mercenaries to help the Somali Government fight Al Shabaab militants.

Foreign Affairs Minister Moses Wetangula yesterday dismissed as media rumours reports that some Government officials were recruiting and training hundreds of Somali youths to be sent to Somalia.

The Al Shabaab is one of the insurgent groups fighting to topple the Transitional Federal Government backed by neigbouring countries like Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda.

"It has never been the job of our Government to train mercenaries to fight in neigbouring countries. It does not serve our national interests," he said. The Minister, however, admitted that Kenya was training Somali police officers in camps like Manyani.

"We have standing agreements with the Somali Government to help them train police and immigration officials," he said.

The Manyani camp has been the centre of the mercenary training controversy with claims that it is being done under the cover of training police officers.
