Residents say hundreds of government troops have attacked positions held by Islamist fighters in the south and north of the Somali capital.
Resident Abdi Haji says government troops captured strategic parts of the Wadnaha road which the troops lost to Islamist fighters earlier this month.
Wadnaha, which connects the north and south of the city, is one of the four major roads in Mogadishu. Whoever controls it will occupy strategic defensive positions.
