UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The U.N. Security Council is condemning the recent upsurge in fighting in Somalia led by extremists and is giving its strong support to the country's new government.A statement approved Friday by all 15 council members demands that opposition groups immediately end their offensive, renounce violence and join reconciliation efforts.
It singles out for criticism al-Shabab, an insurgent group seeking to overthrow the Western-backed government and establish an Islamic state.
The council expresses concern at reports that neighboring Eritrea has supplied arms to opponents of the government in violation of a U.N. arms embargo.
