MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — The Somali cabinet has voted to use Islamic law as the basis of the country's legal system in a bid to win popular support and undercut an Islamic insurgency.

The implementation of Shariah has been a key demand of Islamic insurgents fighting the U.N.-backed government. The insurgency has become increasingly divided since the appointment of former Islamic fighter Sheik Ahmed Sheik Sharif to the presidency in January.

The bill introducing Islamic law, also known as Shariah, must still be approved by the country's parliament, which is expected to hear it within days.
