WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. officials say the Obama administration has decided to beef up its efforts to support Somalia's embattled government, including a new plan to provide funding for weapons and help the Djibouti military train Somalis.

The decision to begin providing military assistance came during a review of the administration's Somalia policy, which identified an urgent need to supply the government with ammunition and weapons as it struggles with increasingly powerful Islamic militants.

Officials said the U.S. would not do the training and no U.S. military would be in Somalia. But the U.S. would provide logistical support for the training, and provide arms to the Somalis from other African nations.

Several senior U.S. officials spoke about the emerging plan on condition of anonymity because the details have not yet been finalized.
