Celebrate Somali Independence Day

at Midtown Global Market

WHAT:  In honor of Somali Independence Day, Midtown Global Market’s Safari Express                                       will produce a celebration on Saturday, June 27, 2009 starting at 11 a.m. in the                                              Market’s Central Plaza.

Owners of Safari Express, brothers Jamal and Sade Hashi, came to America from Somalia in 1993.  They wanted to produce an event where Minnesotans could get a taste of what life is like in Somalia and learn about the country’s rich historical background and traditions. 

The event will also highlight how Somalis celebrate their independence, and how it is similar to and different from America’s Independence Day.

                        The celebration will include:

                        - Historical Presentations                                   - Children’s Activities

                        - Somali Fashion Show                                      - Live Traditional Music

                        - Authentic Cooking Demonstrations                   - And More       

                        Somalia gained its independence from Italy on July 1, 1960.
