MOGADISHU (HOL) - Representatives from Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government and the moderate Islamist group of Ahl Sunnah Waljama’a held talks in Mogadishu to discuss ways to cooperate in their fight against militant Islamist groups of Al-Shabaab and Hisbul Islam.Mr. Salaad Ali Jeele who is a member of Somalia’s interim Parliament spoke at the meeting and highlighted the need for the two sided to cooperate and how that can help the efforts to restore peace and security to Somalia.
Mr. Jeele added that they (the TFG) are happy to see moderate Islamists take up arms to fight those who do not want the establishment of a government in Somalia.
Sheik Omar Sheik Mohamed Farah who participated in the talks via a telephone from one of the central regions of Somalia also welcomed a cooperation between the two sides but blamed the TFG for being slow in forming collaborative working relationship with his group.
This meeting comes after the President of Somalia’s TFG Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed recently met with members of Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jama’a and called upon them to take part in defending Somalia.
