With a racist attack at Ħal Far almost everyday it has now been dubbed by the migrants as a ‘no-go area’. Hostility towards the migrants walking along the main road in Ħal Far is growing.

Bags filled with urine are being thrown at migrants. Similarly, some drivers entice them into their cars with an offer of work, only to fire pepper spray into their face.

Abditafah Mohamed was cycling along the road in Ħal Far when a car pulled over and three men got out and hit him with a rod on his head. Then, they put him in the middle of the road before they left.

A spokesman for the NGOs (Graffiti, Jesuit Refugee Services, the Peace Lab, Third world Group, Koppin, Migrants’’ Solidarity Movement, the Fair Trade Cooperative, AD Youths and Zminijietna) Andre’ Callus said that not enough is being done to tackle racism in Malta.

He said that politicians must do more to tackle racism rather than just condemning it.

The NGOs called for concrete measures from government to tackle hate crime. He warned also against giving racists a platform for their views by overstating the actions of a violent minority.

They suggested that the remit of the National Commission for the Promotion of Equality should be extended to investigate discriminations against migrants.
