Somalia Islamists Jail 20 Women

MOGADISHU (HOL) - The Islamist administration that controls Bay region in the south west of Somalia has jailed 20 women after they disobeyed a decree requiring all women to wear Hijab.

Forces of the administration that control the city could be seen patrolling the streets of the city to arrest those who disobey the law requiring women to wear Hijab. Using loudspeakers and sound amplifiers, the Islamist forces also warned residents of the city not to engage activities that prohibits the sale and consumption of Khat in public areas of the city.
 
Similar decrees that require women to wear Hijab have also been passed in several regions under the control of the Islamist group of Al-Shabaab. These regions include the Juba regions, parts of Gedo region, Lower Shabele and Bay and Bakool regions.
 
Earlier the Islamic administration that controls Bay and Bakool regions also passed a law that prohibits the sale and consumption of Khat in public areas of the city. The administration gave designated areas where the sale and consumption of Khat is allowed. Khat is an amphetamine-like mild stimulant consumed in Somalia, Yemen and in other countries in the Horn of Africa.
