Rees, bartender-cook at Coyotes Restaurant and Pub at Whitefield Dr. and 36 St. N.E., said he found Calgary's first homicide victim of the year on the ground, covered in blood.
"I tried to revive him and there was blood all over the place," said Rees yesterday, adding he's trained in first aid.
"I wasn't sure if the guy was breathing but I tried to make him as comfortable as possible."
A bystander called 911 while Rees performed CPR on the man, who the bartender said appeared to have been stabbed. The victim is said to be a Somali man in his 20s .
Since Coyotes' owner didn't have any plans for New Year's Eve, the pub was rented out to a young crowd that night.
The pub supplied waitresses for the party of between 85 and 100 people, who had their own disc jockey and music.
The party went smoothly, said Rees, but about 1 a.m., he closed the bar because orders had slowed down.
He went to the back of the pub and several minutes later a fight erupted out front. Police haven't determined what sparked the fight.
Cops and ambulance were called around 1:30 a.m. The victim was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Police have not released the name of the homicide victim or how he died.
Second-degree murder charges have been laid against Northwind Hart, 32, in connection with the slaying.
