Minnesota Visiting Nurse Agency Announces
Seasonal Flu Clinics will begin Saturday, Aug. 29, at the
2009 Minnesota State Fair!

WHO and WHAT: The nonprofit Minnesota Visiting Nurse Agency (MVNA) is getting a fast head start on its 2009 Seasonal flu vaccination clinics by offering Seasonal flu  vaccinations beginning Saturday, Aug. 29, at the Minnesota State Fair. The vaccinations will be available daily from Aug. 29 through Monday, Sept. 7, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. in the Health Fair 11 Building (East Crossroads Building), located at the corner of Dan Patch Ave. and Cooper St.

UCare, the state’s fourth-largest health plan, has generously offered to share its Health Fair 11 building booth space at the Fair with MVNA to make this important community health service available to all eligible individuals attending the Minnesota State Fair.

Seasonal flu vaccinations will be available in two types: (1) Flu shot for ages 4 and up, and (2) FluMist® for ages 2 years through 49 years. Minors must be accompanied by a parent.

All proceeds from MVNA’s Seasonal flu vaccination program will support home nursing services for disadvantaged families in the community.

WHY: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) recommend providers begin immunizing for “Seasonal Flu” as early in September as possible. This recommendation is based on the expectation that Seasonal flu vaccination providers may also be called upon to provide H1N1 vaccinations later this year. As a result, individuals will need one “seasonal flu” and probably two novel A-H1N1 flu immunizations.

Anyone can get and spread the Seasonal flu. According to the CDC, 5 to 20 percent of the U.S. population will get the [seasonal] flu every year and about 36,000 will die1. An annual flu vaccination is still the simplest, most effective way to prevent the Seasonal flu, along with regular hand washing, correct coughing or sneezing techniques, and other good health practices.

HOW: Public Seasonal flu vaccination clinics are convenient and administered by trained MVNA Registered Nurses. MVNA clinics will be held this fall at the 2009 Minnesota State Fair, Cub stores, and many other public locations. MVNA follows all CDC and MDH guidelines for flu shot administration, and is a recipient of the MDH “Mark of Excellence” for its flu immunization program.
