JOWHAR, Somalia, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Thousands of internally displaced people are facing a food crisis in Jowhar, Somalia, food shipments to the town have been disrupted, an official says.

Community leader Asiyo Jilibey told Integrated Regional Information Networks Thursday that since food shipments to Jowhar ended two months ago, thousands of people there have struggled to find food.

"The little food we were given in June is gone; we have had nothing in the last two months," Jilibey said. "I don't know what will happen next but if help does not arrive soon we are in trouble."

Jowhar is home to seven refugee camps housing an estimated 49,000 people. Jilibey said most of those people were forced to relocate to the refugee camps in the face of increased violence in the capital of Mogadishu in 2007.

U.N. World Food Program Somalia spokesman Mahamud Hassan told IRIN lack of security in parts of Somalia is preventing food shipments from reaching Jowhar.
