UGANDA is to benefit from a sh1.4b commercial agricultural investment venture by the Somali community living in here, a top official announced last week. Yassin Muhammed, the newly-elected business development chief, explained during a dinner organised by the community to invigorate its operations after 23 years of dormancy that they were eager to invest more in a country that has hosted many of them for decades.
He disclosed that most of them had become citizens, while several others have been born here.
“We are already involved in a number of business ventures such as transport, forex and fuel trade but one of the areas that we have identified as lagging behind is that of food security yet it is key to the development process of any country,” Muhammed said.
He said over 400 acres of land valued at sh600m had been opened up in Kayunga district for rice and maize farming.
