MOGADISHU, Somalia, Aug. 9 (UPI) - At least 10 people were killed Saturday when rebels shelled the largest market in Mogadishu, the Somali capital, witnesses said.

Another 12 people were injured in Bakara Market, Shabelle Media Network reported.

Witnesses said most of those hit were civilians.

The sound of weapons firing came from other parts of the capital as well, Shabelle said.

President Sharif Sheik Ahmed returned Saturday to Mogadishu after traveling to Nairobi for a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton. The president, the founder of the Islamic Courts Union, was ousted from Mogadishu by Ethiopian troops and then elected president in an effort to give Somalia a working government.
