MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) - Somali officials say gunmen have critically wounded a lawmaker and killed his driver in the country's first attack on a legislator since a new unity government was formed earlier this year.
District commissioner Kulmiye Yabarow says gunmen opened fire on a car carrying Amir Mohamed Jaketi on Wednesday morning in northern Mogadishu. Eyewitness
Mohamed Aweys said he saw the men shoot Jaketi several times in the head and chest.
The shooting underlines the difficulty the new government will face in trying to persuade fighters to join the peace process instead of seeking to destroy the country's latest government in a long string of failures.
Last week fighters placed a roadside bomb that injured the country's new interior minister.
