Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman has criticized world powers for being indifferent toward the insecurity of international waters.

In a press conference on Saturday, Hassan Qashqavi said Iran is shocked by the apathetic approach of certain powers toward organized crime in Somalia and the country's territorial waters.

An Iranian bulk carrier, carrying 42,500 tons of minerals and industrial products, was hijacked by pirates in the Gulf of Aden off the Somali coast on August 21.

Diplomatic measures taken by Iran's Foreign Ministry have so far failed to secure the safe return of the hijacked vessel.

Somali gunmen are reportedly holding more than 10 ships for ransom at Eyl, a lawless former fishing outpost.

Qashqavi said should the international community continue to be indifferent to the violence and gunmen in the Somali region, such actions will spread to neighboring areas and cause further chaos.
