The African Union condemns the attack on AMISOM Burundi contingent oday 07 November 2008. The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Jean Ping, currently attending the Regional Summit in Nairobi on the situation in DRC learned with deep concern about the bomb attack on AMISOM Burundi contingent in which one Medical Officer lost his leg.
The Chairperson of the Commission strongly condemns this cowardly attack on peacekeepers specially Medical Doctors whose mandate includes provision of medical assistance to the desperate Somali population.
The objective of these attacks perpetrated by the enemies of peace is to undermine the peace process which is gaining momentum.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission calls on all peace oving Somalis to join the African Union in condemning these barbaric acts and in solating these elements opposed to peace and stability in Somalia.
These acts will neither intimidate nor deter the African Union from resolutely continuing to promote reconciliation, dialogue and lasting peace in Somalia.
