The ailing president of the Somali transitional federal government, Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, is in London (UK) for a routine medical check-up, presidential spokesman Hussein Mohamed Mahmoud confirmed to APA on Tuesday.

According to the presidential spokesman popularly known as Huub Sireed, the president has reached London this morning and will visit his doctor in the next few hours as scheduled.

“I heard some speculations saying that the president’s health is very serious, but I can confirm that the Somali president is fine. He will only get a routine check-up for his old liver transplant,” Mohamed Mahmoud told APA by phone on Tuesday.

The 73-year old former warlord-president goes yearly to his London-based doctor for a medical examination.

“We hope that the president will be back within a week, because his health condition is not so serious,” he added.

Late last month, Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed participated in the IGAD-sponsored meeting held in Nairobi, Kenya during which the political and security situations in Somalia were discussed.

Somalia has been experiencing endless civil wars since the downfall of the military rule in 1991.
