Mogadishu, Somalia (HOL) - Spain has announced it will send a military ship to Somalia seas to fight piracy on Somalia’s waters.Spain’s Minister of Defence Ms. Carme Chacon on Sunday called on the international community to send troops to Somalia’s seas which, as she said, has had no authority to guard since the fall of late Mohamed Siad Bare’s government.
She said that her country will soon a send a military ship to Somalia seas which will carry troops to fight piracy and illegal fishing on Somalia’s seas.
“We plan to send a military ship to Somalia seas because the fishing season has begun which is when foreign fishing ships fish illegally on Somalia seas” said the Minister who spoke to El Pais newspaper which is a daily newspaper in Spain.
Spain recently paid over a million dollar in ransom to pirates who where holding a ship that belongs to Spain and its crew some of whom were Spanish citizens.
According to the UN agency responsible for the seas, over 25 attacks on ships and boats on Somalia seas took place last year. The ships and boats attacked consisted of some that were carrying humanitarian supplies, some were fishing illegally on Somalia seas and other that were travelling there for various reasons.
