The Uganda People's Defense Forces has dismissed as false and malicious reports that Uganda peace keeping troops in Somalia are selling arms to terrorists. This follows a UN report which for the second time implicated some Ugandan troops currently on peace keeping duties in war torn Somali of selling arms to some of the Islamic groups that are terrorizing the country.
The Spokesman of the Somali Peace keeping mission, Maj. Bahoku Barigye says the report is based on unsubstantiated rumours and not standard research. He says the Ugandan troops have never and will never engage in arms trade with terrorist groups in Somalia.
Barigye says the Ugandan troops who are in Somalia fulfilling their peace keeping duties are instead victims of the terrorist organizations in Somalia who have so far killed five Ugandan soldiers and injured many more in their numerous ambushes.
He says an investigation carried out by the UPDF after the first report indicated some Ugandan soldiers were selling arms to Somalis found the allegations to be false as no Uganda arms were missing.
Barigye believes the allegations are being fueled by the terrorist group in Somalia who want the peace keeping troops to be tainted and finally leave Somalia.
Uganda has deployed more that 1,500 peace keeping troops in war torn Somali under the African Union Peace Keeping Mission.
