MOGADISHU (AFP) — Gunmen killed an Somali aid worker in Mogadishu on Monday, an official said, highlighting deteriorating security in the lawless African nation.

Siyad Orow, 38, head of local Somali charity, ASAL, was kidnapped and later shot dead in the Somali capital, they said.

"He was kidnapped around 9:00 am near Garasbaley, but in the afternoon we got information that he was killed," an UN official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Family member Mohamed Mo'alim Yusuf confirmed that two armed men killed the aid worker in Bakara, but gave no other details on the identity of the attackers.

ASAL is a charity that works with the World Food Programme to distribute food to hundreds of thousands of Somalis camped along the road between Mogadishu and Afgoyee, 30 kilometres (18 miles) to the west.

A second group of gunmen seized Mohamoud Abdi Adan, coordinator for charity group, Water for Life, on his way to Mogadishu.

"We don't know where he has been taken, but he was travelling from Merka to Mogadishu where he was planning to take a flight," said his father, Abdi Adan.

Aid workers have become an increasing target in Somalia in recent years, choking humanitarian operations in the country in years of conflict since the 1991 ouster of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.
