A firearm used by a Somali national charged with killing a fifteen-year-old boy in the Oceanview informal settlement near Jeffrey's Bay was stolen, Eastern Cape police said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Superintendent Priscilla Naidu said two 9mm parabellum pistols had been confiscated from the Somali, identified as Kakim Ahmed. Both firearms had been stolen.

One was stolen from a police officer in Kwanobuhle in 2006 and the other firearm was stolen in Knysna.

Ahmed, still in police custody, had allegedly shot and killed the fifteen-year-old boy after the boy walked out of his shop with two chickens that the boy had not paid for.

Members of the community were outraged and looted 16 Somali-owned shops in Oceanview and chased away about 50 Somalis.

The Somalis sought refuge at the Jeffrey's Bay police station and had not returned to Oceanview by Wednesday.
