Mogadishu, Somalia (HOL) – August 11, 2008 marks the first anniversary of the killing of two journalists who were prominent journalist in Mogadishu, late Ali Iman Sharmrke and Mahad Ahmed Ilmi.

Many in the Somali media understandably feel sad to mark this anniversary. It was the morning of August 11, 2008 when journalist Mahad Ahmed Ilmi was assassinated near Horn Afrik Media office while on his way to his office. The assailants were armed with hand guns. Mr. Ilmi was well-known for his daily program Capital Voice.

After the assassination of Mr. Ilmi, late Ali Iman Sharmrke who was at the time one of the owners of Horn of Afrik announced that programs at Horn Afrik will be halted while burial preparations were being made for his colleague Ilmi.

After the burial of Ilmi, the car Mr. Sharmarke and his colleagues were riding back from the funeral was hit by an explosion where unfortunately he died as well. This was a sad already only to be made sadder by Sharmarke’s death.

The deaths of these two prominent individuals are being commemorated in several places around the world to keep their memory and accomplishment alive.

The killing of the two Horn Afrik colleagues created a fear among journalist in Mogadishu, particularly those who work for Horn Afrik. Some of their colleagues left the country and are now in Somaliland, Djibouti, and Nairobi while others immigrated to Europe.
