Clashes between government soldiers and the insurgency in Somalia have left 17 people dead and eight others injured south of Mogadishu.

The sound of heavy gunfire and explosions in the southern district of Harayale and on the road leading to the presidential palace could be heard from the nearby Wardhiigley district south of the capital, Press TV correspondent reported.

An estimated 12,000 civilians have been forced to flee northern Mogadishu after Ethiopian soldiers erected military bases in their neighborhoods.

Somalia's capital has known little but near-daily shootouts, roadside bombings and assassinations since Ethiopian troops helped oust Islamist rulers from Mogadishu in early 2007.
