Mogadishu  (AFP) - Gunmen killed a district chief and a police officer during an attack in the Somali capital, where the government is battling a deadly insurgency, an official said on Wednesday.

Mogadishu's Huriwa district commissioner Hussein Absuge was killed and his deputy seriously wounded in the overnight attack, said Mohamed Muhidin, spokesperson for the Mogadishu mayor.

Five other police officer were wounded in the ensuing gunfight, witnesses said.

Remnant Islamist fighters have carried out near-daily attacks in this seaside capital since their movement was toppled in January by Ethiopia-backed government forces.

Last week, a newly-formed Islamist-dominated alliance said its forces had launched an offensive against Ethiopian troops.

Somalia has lacked an effective government since the 1991 ouster of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre touched off a deadly clan-based power struggle that has defied numerous efforts to restore stability.
