Emporians Speak About Somali Refugees

There may be more Somali refugees on the way to Emporia, leaving some citizens concerned. A town hall meeting was held to discuss the issue.

Citizens, Tyson plant officials (where several hundred refuees work) Senator JimBarnett, health officials and others were on hand for the meeting.

One issue people were concerned about – tuberculosis. Some refugees have latent TB, which means it is in their system but not active – not contagious.

Emporia likely won’t see massive numbers of refugees—the economy won’t support it. More likely – family members of refugees already there will rejoin their families.

Barnett says misunderstanding can be dangerous.
