The Young Somali Professionals of North America (YSPNA) and the George Mason University Somali Student Association (SSA) will jointly host an Education Forum titled “Pursuit of Excellence and the Path to  Higher Education” on Saturday March 24, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at George Mason University Fairfax campus for Somali junior and senior high school students in the Greater Washington Metropolitan area.

This event is free to all students who register and meals will be included. The goal of the forum will be to: (1) inform participants of the value of attaining a college education; (2) expose participants to college students and professionals of Somali descent; and (3) enable participants to network with their peers from other area high schools.

The forum will kick off with a keynote speaker who will share his/her experiences with participants. Following the keynote speaker there will be a town hall style discussion made up of 4-5 members with diverse educational and professional backgrounds. This discussion will be moderated and allows for participants to ask questions.  The town hall discussions will be followed by 2 concurrent breakout sessions titled “College Bound: Ins and Outs of applying to College” and “Building blocks to a Successful life” which will repeat again in the afternoon. These interactive sessions will be lead by a facilitator and at least 2 presenters with expertise in college admissions and financial aid.

Following lunch there will be a brief campus tour. After the tour the morning breakout sessions will repeat. The forum will adjourn with awards given to participants.
