NDP statement on the violence in Somalia

advertisements
New Democrats are extremely concerned with the rapid escalation of violence in Somalia. The UN refugee agency has said that up to one million people are now homeless. 60% of Mogadishu residents have fled their homes. Canada must take immediate action to help bring peace to Somalia.

In light of the escalating violence, aid agencies are warning that a catastrophe is unfolding in Somalia. UN special envoy Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah has described Somalia's humanitarian crisis as the worst in Africa.

Despite deteriorating conditions, Canada’s aid has dropped from $3.2 million in 2006 to $2.5 million in 2007.

Given the need for immediate action, and the opportunity now presented to make a positive impact in the lives of millions of Somalis, the NDP urges the Canadian government to lead the international community in support of African initiatives to stabilize Somalia in the following ways:

  • Contribute to the $237 million UN funding appeal for humanitarian assistance in Somalia

  • Support the deployment of an impartial AU peace-support mission to Somalia (AMISOM), matching leading contributions from the EU (15 million euro) and UN ($14 million), along with logistical support, equipment and training;

  • Increase diplomatic engagement in the conflict through support for regional peace initiatives;

  • Demand the immediate cessation of all unilateral military action by the US and Ethiopia in Somalia

  • Ensure the well-being of Canadians currently detained by the transitional government of Somalia, and

  • Report on actions taken by the Canadian government to secure their safe release.
