(AP) -- Four children were found dead Friday morning in a housing complex after a man went to police headquarters and said he had killed his family.

A woman found injured in the rampage was being treated at a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries, said police Lt. Col. Philip Turner.

Police officers sent to the apartment at the Iroquois Homes complex found the children's bodies. The children appeared to be 8 years old or younger, said Turner, who did not disclose details of the injuries.

The family appeared to be of Somali descent, and translators were assisting police, he said.

"There are a whole lot of questions of the why," Turner said. "We don't have a clue right now of the why."

The man went to police headquarters about 9 a.m. Friday and told homicide detectives that he had killed his family, Turner said.

Police had taped off a large section of the street in front of and around the apartment complex.

Several officers and an evidence technician truck were at the scene as dozens of residents looked on as they stood behind the police tape.

Mayor Jerry Abramson went to the scene to help coordinate efforts after he heard there was a potential language barrier

"As a parent it's beyond thinkable," the mayor said.
