NAIROBI, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- A global press freedom watchdog Thursday condemned the latest attacks on media in Somalia which included closing a radio station and burning newspapers.

In a statement, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) called on the increasingly powerful Supreme Council of Islamic Courts (SCIC) to reopen East Africa Radio it shut down last Sunday in Mogadishu.

According to Sheik Abdirahim Ali Mudey, head of the Islamic Courts information office, the station was closed because of "misinformation and faults." He said that the SCIC would appoint a new administration and workers for the radio station.

"We condemn the closure of East Africa Radio," said Gabriel Baglo, director of the IFJ Africa Office, "We urge the Islamic Courts Council to reopen the radio and let the original employees work safely and freely."

The press freedom watchdog also said it was concerned by the torching last week of more than a thousand newspaper in Somalia.  Enditem
