advertisements TANZANIA Mainland team, Kilimanjaro Heroes playing a formality game, yesterday thrashed Djibouti 3-0, to finish on top of group A with maximum points. Following the results, Kilimanjaro Stars who had already qualified will now play against the second runner-up of group C made up by Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda and Somalia. The result also means Djibouti who had to win by not less than three goals to qualify, have booked their ticket back to Djibouti. Mrisho Ngassa opened the score for Kilimanjaro Stars in the fourth minute before the Taifa Stars midfielder Hussein Swedi added the second in the 44th minute. The young star from Makongo High School, Jerry Tegete, put the last nail on Djibouti coffin in the 58th minute. In another group A match, the host, Ethiopia, were expected to take on Malawi. Following Kilimanjaro win, both teams have qualified. While Kilimanjaro Stars are safely through to the quarterfinal, their brothers from the Zanzibar Mapinduzi Stars today will need just one point to qualify when they take Zambia in their last group B match. Zanzibar drew in their first game against Burundi on Wednesday while Zambia lost their first game to Burundi. Meanwhile, in group C match played on Thursday Uganda Cranes grounded bitter rivals Rwanda and qualified for the quarterfinals of the CECAFA Challenge Cup. The result was sweet revenge for Uganda who was knocked out of the last tournament by Rwanda’s Amavubi at the semi-final stage. Geoffrey Sserunkuma struck mid-way the second half to sink Uganda’s nemesis. He was set up to fire from close range after Hassan Mubiru and Dan Wagaluka exchanged short passes from the right flank. In another group C match, Sudan thrashed Somalia 3-0. Group games end on Sunday with matches between Uganda against Somalia and Sudan versus Rwanda. The tournament winner will pocket $35000.
