20 years ago saw the launch of a UN mission to Somalia which was to end in the corpses of US soldiers being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu. For a while Washington lost interest in foreign intervention. When the Somali dictator Siad Barre fell in the civil war in 1991, mass starvation loomed in the East African country. The UN Security Council unanimously agreed in 1992 on an international mission to improve the security situation in Somalia. The job of commanding the "United Task Force" was given to the Unietd States. Rashid Abdi, a Somali expert, said the task force opened up humanitarian corridors for aid to Somalia and was initially welcome by the population. "People were able to get something to eat again," he said. But then the mission acquired a political and military dimension. "When the US soldiers were killed, the mission ended in disaster" he said.
