Puntland Minister of Justice says few people cannot change Somalia's constitution

Friday March 22, 2024

Garowe (HOL) - The Minister of Justice, Religious, and Constitutional Affairs of the Puntland regional administration, Mohamed Abdiwahab, stated that President Hassan Sheikh and a few ministers in the Federal Council of Ministers could not change the provisional constitution of the country.

Speaking in Garowe on Friday, Minister Mohamed said, "Interior Minister Ahmed Fiqi, Minister of Constitution Hassan Moalim, and President Hassan Sheikh cannot change the constitution of Somalia, and there is nowhere you can take it; stop playing," he said

"The provisional constitution defines the federal system and the system of government that the country has adopted, which is parliamentary, with multiple parties, a president, and a prime minister," he added.

The current constitution was approved by 3,000 Somali delegates during the Somalia National Reconciliation Conference, which took place in Mbagathi, Kenya, in 2003-2004.

The regional Minister of Justice emphasized that the federal interior minister is required to liberate the areas of his constituency in Galmudug state.

"It's not time to change the constitution, but what is needed is only to agree and complete the remaining provisions in the Constitution," he noted.

The minister's remarks come as former presidents, prominent politicians, and Puntland State leaders strongly oppose President Mohamud's efforts to amend and review the constitution, which are continuing in the bicameral houses of parliament.

Puntland leaders will host a constitution consultation forum in Garowe next week, which former Presidents Mohamed Farmaajo and Sheikh Sheikh will attend.
