Djibouti announces IGAD summit on Ethiopia-Somalia diplomatic row

Friday January 12, 2024

Djibouti (HOL) - Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh announced on Thursday the convening of an urgent meeting of leaders from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to address political and diplomatic developments in the region.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Djibouti, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda will host the meeting on January 18, 2024.

The summit is set to tackle two main issues: the escalating diplomatic row between Ethiopia and Somalia over the Somali Sea and the Ethiopian deal with Somaliland, as well as the political and security challenges in Sudan.

Djibouti, the current chair of IGAD, stated that the African Union and international partners expect to attend the meeting through diplomatic channels.

The statement reaffirmed Djibouti’s commitment to good neighbourliness and regional cooperation, expressing hope for a peaceful and stable resolution of regional conflicts.

The international community, including the US, Turkey, Djibouti, European Union, and African Union, have all called for respect for the territorial integrity of the Federal Government of Somalia after Ethiopia signed a port deal with the Somaliland region in Somalia.

Somalia strongly rejected a port deal signed in Addis Ababa by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi on January 1. The agreement would pave the way for Ethiopia to set up commercial marine operations, giving it access to a leased military base on the Red Sea.
