Third suspect in fatal shooting of Toronto mom fled to Somalia, police say

Wednesday February 7, 2024

Ahmed Ali is wanted by Toronto Police for robbery and manslaughter charges related to the July 7, 2023 shooting in Leslieville, Toronto.

Toronto (HOL) - The Toronto Police Service has issued a Canada-wide warrant for 19-year-old Ahmed Ali in connection to the daylight shooting death of Karolina Huebner-Makurat, 44, a mother of two caught in crossfire last summer in Leslieville. The murder occurred on July 7, around 12:30 p.m., near Queen Street East and Carlaw Avenue, when what is believed to have been a robbery attempt escalated into a shootout involving three men.

Detective Henri Marsman revealed that Ali, who faces charges of manslaughter and robbery with a firearm, is suspected to have fled to Somalia shortly after the incident. The police's effort to bring Ali to justice is complicated by the lack of an extradition treaty with Somalia, Marsman noted, expressing hope for a voluntary surrender influenced by public appeal or family persuasion.

The shooting, which unfolded during an altercation believed to be linked to the drug trade, has left the Leslieville community in mourning and sparked a dialogue on safety and the impact of drug-related activities in the area. Near the scene, the South Riverdale Community Health Centre faced scrutiny after Khalila Zara Mohammed, 23, an employee, was arrested for obstructing justice and being an accessory after the fact, raising questions about the center's role in the neighbourhood's safety.

Two other suspects, Damian Hudson, 32, and Ahmed Mustafa Ibrahim, 20, both of Toronto, have been arrested and face charges including second-degree murder and manslaughter, respectively. Their alleged involvement has further highlighted the connections between crime, community safety, and the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing violence rooted in illicit activities.
