Somali forces foil ambush attack in central region, killing over dozen militants

Friday November 11, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somalia's armed forces said it repulsed an al Shabab ambush attack in Burdaar village in Hiiraan region early Friday morning, killing at least 12 terrorists.

Defense Ministry Spokesman General Abdullahi Ali Aanod told state-owned media that the attack was foiled with the help of the locals who provided vital information to the government forces in the village.

General Abdullahi Ali Aanod added that three government soldiers were injured in the fighting and that the operation to flush out the group was still ongoing in the area.

The al-Qaeda-affiliated armed group al Shabab claimed to have captured the village, after launching a suicide attack on the Turkish-trained elite Gorgor military base.

Burdaar is about 30 kilometres from Beleweyne town and serves as a military base for the Gorgor forces.

The group has been under pressure since August, when President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud began an offensive against them, supported by the United States and clan militias known locally known as macawisley, or "men with sarongs".

Last Monday, al-Shabaab fighters attacked a military base in the same region, killing at least ten soldiers, while the group took responsibility for twin bomb attacks in the Somali capital in late October.
